The Rev. Dean Byrom

Dean E. Byrom, our church’s present Pastor is serving among us as the sixth church appointment of his pastoral ministry. Although, only one other appointment, the Janes United Methodist Church in Creighton, Pennsylvania, has been in Allegheny County. All of Pastor Byrom’s other appointments have been in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Over the course of his ministry, Pastor Byrom has come to be more and more focused Upon helping Christian people grow in their discipleship to Christ Jesus. Another term for this approach to “churchbeing” (Marva Dawn’s term” is for a church to move toward being a “practicing congregation” (Diana Butler Bass’ term.) He also has led the Church Council in studying Bass’ book of the same name. The next step in that process is an extended study of Richard Foster’s work entitled, “The Celebration of Discipline”, which teaches the practice of twelve of the historic disciplines of the Christian Faith.

Providing invaluable assistance through her own ministries is his wife of over 20 years, Dawna K. Troutman Byrom, a registered nurse, who serves our Lord through music, teaching and hospitality. Together they are the proud parents of four children (Christy, Kirk, Greg and Brad) and at the time of this writing six beautiful grandchildren (Samantha, T.J.,Tori, Greyson, Alex and Noah.) There are at least two others “in process.”

Pastor Dean was born and raised in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He graduated from McKeesport Senior High School in 1962 and received further education at West Virginia Wesleyan College (B.A. - 1966) and Drew University, School of Theology (M. Divinity -1969.) Throughout his career in Western Pennsylvania he has benefited from both formal and informal study at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where he continues to use a carrel in the library.

His avocations of study, music and fantasy football are finding great avenues of expression here in Coraopolis.
